Michipicoten of Lower Lakes Towing arrives at Duluth Minnesota for another load of iron taconite ore. The Michipicoten was launched as the Elton Hoyt 2nd for the Interlake Steamship Company in 1952. Built as a straight decker, she was fitted with a self uloader right here in Toledo in 1980. In 2003 the Hoyt was sold by Interlake to Lower Lakes Towing to fill a new contract hauling taconite to the Algoma Steel mill in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario. Occasionally she'll break away from Lake Superior for a grain or aggregate run like seen here. In 2011 LLT spend 15 million converting her from steam to diesel as well as a controllable pitch propeller. The Michipicoten is 689 feet long and capable of carrying 22,300 tons.
