3-Gun Nation held their Championship event at the US Shooting Sports Academy in Tulsa this past Saturday (October 10, 2015). For a birthday gift, my wife sent me and some cash to the event so I could have some fun. I got to run the public 3-gun stage a few times, and by the end I had a somewhat respectable 25-second run with three misses. Not too shabby for a newbie, I think. I also shot the Death Star, a Texas Star on a swing-arm. I cleared it in about six seconds with a little help from inertia. I had never shot a .50 BMG rifle before, and Bushmaster had brought a BA-50 for spectators to try. Thirty pounds of rifles and a muzzle brake reduced the recoil to .308 levels. On the opposite end of the spectrum, Surgeon was showing off their Scalpel in an Accuracy International AICS stock. I got to shoot a 175-grain subsonic load from Nexus Ammo. Armalite also brought out an AR-10 for public testing. Nice rig. Watching the competitors was fun, but I really enjoyed the events where I got to do some shooting. If you're able to attend next year's 3GN Championship, I recommend you check it out. On a side note, I couldn't help mentally reviewing some of the gear I was playing with. Here are my notes: (1) The trigger on the Bushmaster BA-50 is the worst trigger on a modern rifle I've yet encountered. It feels like my Mosin trigger. (2) The Leupold Mark 8 scope is very nice. But my first impression is that it ain't worth $4,500. The Schmidt and Bender PM-II has vastly better glass at a lower price point. (3) The best single-stage trigger I have tested so far is from RISE Armament. It's crisp and light, with barely any overtravel. (4) Armalite has stepped up their game with the new models. Both the AR-15 and AR-10 were very fun to shoot. (5) I know that the Remington R1 is a fine pistol, but I still don't like 1911s. I couldn't help but feel like I could have performed better in the small 3-gun stage with a Glock. - The Social Regressive
