Hundreds of soldiers and family members gathered in the rain for the Honorable Transfer Ceremony for three Ohio National Guard soldiers killed in Afghanistan. The ceremony was held at the Rickenbacker Air National Guard Base near Columbus, Ohio. On April 4, 2012, a suicide bomber detonated explosives in a park near the northern Afghanistan city of Maimanah. The blast killed Sgt. 1st Class Shawn T. Hannon, 44, of Grove City; Capt. Nicholas J. Rozanski, 36, of Dublin; and Sgt. 1st Class Jeffrey J. Rieck, 46, of the Northwest Side. Ten others in the park also were killed. Four Ohio National Guard soldiers and one Washington National Guard soldier wounded in the attack remain in hospitals here and abroad, according to officials. Hannon and Rieck, who were eligible for promotion when they died, have both been posthumously promoted to the rank of master sergeant. (Columbus Dispatch video by Doral Chenoweth III)
