ChimneySpector: Chimney Inspection by an Autonomous Micro Aerial Vehicle

The video shows the Showcase demonstration of the European Robotics Challenge (EuRoC, Challenge 3) project ChimneySpector of the Autonomous Intelligent Systems Group of University of Bonn (NimbRo Copter) and CRN Management GmbH (airspector®). 
The demonstration was performed in a decommissioned industrial chimney at Zeche Zollverein in Essen, Germany. 
A hexacopter was equipped with a 3D laser scanner and multiple cameras, including a high-resolution stereo camera for chimney wall modeling. The copter performed two autonomous missions to capture the chimney surface. The surface was reconstructed quickly and locations for closer inspection were identified. In a third mission, the copter navigated autonomously to these locations and captured more data. After the demonstration, the chimney surfaces were reconstructed in high detail.
