We've been making monostring electric guitars as a summary project in electromagnetism for a few years. This year, several students took me up on the challenge of playing a song. Here's what they made. The total cost of these is less than $5 per guitar if you're making at least a few of them, and I encourage you to try to build a few with your friends. If you think you recognize the last song, put it in the comments. Go!
