Dozens of people are searching for a 17-year-old girl who disappeared over the weekend.

Daffny Velder was last seen on Saturday afternoon in the Susquehanna neighborhood of Independence. She had taken her dog out for a walk, but the dog returned to the house alone about 30 minutes later.

Velder's parents told KMBC's Maria Antonia that the teen was upset when she left the house. "She was upset with some things in the home and she left the house. She's never done anything like this before -- that's all we can say," said Mark Velder, Daffny's father.

Nancy Velder, Daffny's mother, said her daughter left without her favorite sweatshirt and sunglasses, which is highly unusual.

"I keep thinking about how cold she must be because she doesn't have her pullover," Nancy Velder said.

Her parents said Daffny hasn't contacted anyone since Saturday, not even her best friends. They said Daffny has never run away before.

KMBC's Maria Antonia reported that about 80 people searched an area east of Missouri 291 Highway and south of U.S. Highway 24 on Tuesday.

Velder's family said they will kick off another search Wednesday morning.
