Ketsui is a vertically scrolling serious shoot `em-up by Cave. The genre this game falls into more specifically is one of the `maniac 2D shooters` that have become the latest form of expression of the oldest genre known.

Art direction wise follows that of an urban, industrial, military universe that seems to be set not so far in the future. The graphics are simply marvelous, some of the best seen ever for a shoot `em-up in this orientation/class (Namco`s Nebulasray still gives it a run for its money though!) and certainly the best Cave has yet to offer by a country mile. Everything has an almost believable design; meaty vehicles, explosions, wonderful animation, a subtle yet bright when needed colour palette coupled with, surprisingly for Cave; minimal slowdown.

In this game even the music is excellent, not Sammy`s Viewpoint excellent but very good indeed nevertheless.

Controls are to be as expected-flawless. Three buttons are used; A) Lock-on focused power shot. B) Smart bomb. C) Normal rapid automatic shot (spread or straight depending on the selection of the two ships available).

The game has my personal honour of being the last entry into my all-time-gaming Top Ten in a decade. Why? Simple. This game is nearly perfect. It's supremely challenging, incredibly entertaining and amazingly simple yet deep and above all f`ing addictive!

I am by no means a fan of Cave or other offerings from different developers within this genre. Ketsui is very special indeed.

In over 20 years of visiting arcades on a weekly basis I have put more money into Ketsui (and continue to do so) than any other coin-op bar none.

This is the highest accolade I can give.

Luckily, I either own, have played or have access to all the greatest Japanese shoot `em-ups known but since courting Ketsui all else seems, well, a bit uninteresting for me compared.

Ketsui is a one-off masterpiece.

The end.
