A short but stout loop to Pilot Mountain deep in the Pisgah Ranger District of Pisgah National Forest. This peak is easily visible from many other summits in the area. I took the Art Loeb Trail from Gloucester Gap, climbing nearly 1,800 feet in just 2 miles. The climb is relentless. The summit, at 5,095 feet, has open views southeast of Looking Glass Rock and north and west of the Great Balsam Mountains above the Blue Ridge Parkway. Unfortunately thick clouds came in as I approached the summit, so I didn't get the views I expected. Afterwards the ALT descends steeply to Deep Gap. From there I took FR 229 back as it wound around the base of the mountain. A good workout for a half-day hike.

Hike was 5.0 miles in 3 hours. I grossly overestimated the hike in the video to be 7.5 miles due to it being much tougher than I expected.
