MSF’s reconstructive surgery project in Amman, Jordan, provides a unique vantage point on the conflicts that have roiled the greater Middle East in recent years. It’s a crossroads of sorts, a place where the consequences of several different wars are visible simultaneously. Originally started in 2006 to treat Iraqis wounded in that country’s war, the project was designed to provide surgery for people who had gotten substandard care in their homeland or no care at all for their injuries. As other conflicts flared and the so-called Arab Spring dawned, MSF’s team in Amman started treating patients from Gaza, Libya, Yemen, and Egypt as well. Now Syrians make up some 43 percent of all new arrivals to the program.
