We have this idea now that potentially there are these long term courses that are driving cancer and so we wanted to feature experts that are doing really innovative work -- including Dr. Michael Schachter who spoke at the Functional Forum dedicated to oncology in January 2015.

I've been helping to prevent and treat cancer using nutritional and lifestyle support for more than forty years. In fact, our center - the Schachter Center just celebrated its 40th anniversary in November 2014. And although I'm not an oncologist and do not practice conventional oncology, we do see many cancer patients -- some of whom see conventional oncologists also while engaging in our program.

But I depart from any of my integrative oncology colleagues by being somewhat more skeptical of conventional oncology strategies. Many integrative oncologists appeared to take the conventional approach as a given and write books about how we can reduce the side effects of the conventional treatment by giving nutritional supplements and doing various other integrative things.

I have no doubt that patients who undergo a combination of these approaches -- lifestyle and nutritional approach -- with conventional therapy will do better than those patients who just get the conventional treatment alone. But to me, the important question is “Will patients using the combined approach enjoy better results than those who do not participate in conventional treatment at all?”

In other word, instead of asking the question, which most people ask, if nutritional recommendations will interfere with conventional treatments, I like to turn it around and say, “Will the conventional protocol interfere with the less toxic strategies?”

We’ll never see studies like this because there is no financial motivation to do them but this is a question I have in my mind and I try to discuss with the many patients that I see who were trying to make decisions as to what to do.

One example of a conventional protocol that I question is the automatic use of radiation treatment after a lumpectomy for breast cancer. Those studies indicate that radiation does reduce local recurrence -- yet there is no evidence of it improving survival, preventing regional metastasis or preventing distant metastasis. So consequently, the question is “Is it really worth it? Should it be done automatically?”

Many of our breast cancer patients forego radiation much to the dismay of their conventional surgeons, oncologists and radiation oncologists. To me, such a decision is quite reasonable considering the possible negative effects of radiation therapy and the very limited positive effects.

Now two of the questions which haunt me and I'm sure haunt many of you are: “What causes cancer?” and “Why do we have such an epidemic of it now?”

I'm going to try to answer these big questions in this video.
