Funeral prayers said in Istanbul for slain Saudi writer

(16 Nov 2018) Funeral prayers were held in Istanbul on Friday for Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi more than a month after his slaying at the Saudi consulate. Khashoggi's friends, Turkish politicians and others attended the prayers at Istanbul's Fatih Mosque. The prayers were held "in absentia" because The Washington Post columnist's remains have not been found. A 25-year-old tourist from Montpellier, France, said she postponed her return home in order to attend the memorial. "It's a way of saying we defend freedom of expression and above all protest against the way he was killed," Ichraq Achouri said. The prayers came a day after Saudi Arabia announced it would seek the death penalty against five men suspected in the killing.
