(11 Nov 2018) Shortly after speaking to a reporter, a tree weakened by flames collapsed behind Keith Smyth, a U.S. Forest Service fire captain from Dunsmuir, California.
Nobody was injured but it became one more spot fire for firefighters to handle. Smyth leads a crew from the Shasta-Trinity National Forest that has responded to several large wildfires this year.
Smyth and his crew were busy extinguishing flames along a road in Big Bend, California, where several homes were among the more than 6,700 structures, most of them homes, and killed at least 23 people. Fire trucks were parked in driveways as firefighters braced for the possibility of strong winds that could cause the fire to grow.
