Ties between Turkey and the US have been strained since Ankara launched an offensive against Kurdish militia in northeastern Syria, who Washington backs in the fight against Islamic State. Turkey considers the group a terrorist organization. Turkey has also bristled against America's refusal to extradite Pennsylvania-based cleric Fethullah Gulen, the man Turkey blames for a failed coup in 2016. However, there have been signs of improvement. The US delivered its first shipment of F-35 fighter jets to Turkey this Thursday, despite opposition from American lawmakers. And the two nations conducted joint patrols near the Syrian town on Manbij earlier this month. Relations with Russia also deteriorated after the Turkish military downed a Russian warplane near the Turkey-Syria border in November, 2015. Erdogan has expressed regret for the move, and in February and July last year, the two countries saw a warming of ties through their participation in Syrian peace talks in Astana.
