In 1925, the small village of Volendam had a proper art store. This shop provided the necessary materials to painters and draughtsmen, who came by the dozens from home and abroad to visit the picturesque Volendam in order to capture the “simple” and, especially, the “unspoiled” fishing lifestyle. The hotelier Leendert Spaander responded to this romantic desire and decorated his rooms with the familiar knickknacks. He also invited students from the art academy to visit the village.
