Glasgow Central is the largest mainline railway station in Scotland and one of the great Victorian-era transport monuments of Britain. Opened in 1879 and expanded repeatedly as rail traffic grew, the station is covered by an enormous iron-and-glass roof and connected to surrounding streets by elevated railway approaches across central Glasgow. Long-distance, intercity and suburban services link the station with London, southern Scotland and communities throughout the west of the country, making it a central element of Glasgow鈥檚 historic transportation infrastructure.
