COLDWATER -- The Village of Coldwater is under a 48-hour boil advisory due to two water main breaks.Around 9 a.m. Wednesday morning, water lines broke at 7th and Vine and 4th and Plum.Village Manager and Engineer Eric Thomas said the 7th and Vine break was a busted hydrant that broke under the ground, crews were able to repair it in four hours. The break at 4th and Plum was more involved and took all day due to the weather conditions. The ground was frozen, concrete drive was about eight inches thick and the ground was frozen about a foot below that, said Thomas. The breaks did not require an entire shutdown of the water system so only 25 percent of the village was impacted.Homes in a 15-block radius around the breaks are under the boil advisory to remove any possible bacteria in the water.Kara Brockman lives right around the corner from the biggest break. Her family has been using jugs of water to brush their teeth and wash their hands. You want to go to the bathroom, you can't, there's no water, it's definitely difficult to deal with but you make ends meet, said Brockman.School was cancelled due to lack of water but the hospital and local businesses were able to remain open.Thomas is asking residents with water to conserve as much as they can even though there is enough water in the tower to get through the night.Depending on a bacteria report, the boil advisory is expected to be lifted by Friday night.
