On August 2, 2017, a project that she had been working on for some time came to fruition when the debut episode of USA Network's new eight-episode, limited-series-format murder mystery, The Sinner, aired. Biel is both executive producer and series lead character of the show, playing Cora Tannetti, a housewife diagnosed with significant emotional problems, who stabs a supposed stranger to death on a beach in front of dozens of witnesses. Biel stated that she moved into production so that she could develop projects with challenging and interesting roles rather than waiting for them to happen.
