With high job approval ratings, Angela Merkel enjoys a good reputation on the national and international stage. But her center-right Christian Democrat party (CDU) does not seem to be gaining any advantage from the Chancellor's popularity. The CDU's own rating has been hovering around the 39% mark for some time now. 
And in the run-up to the CDU's national party conference, all the talk is of the political center ground. But for many in the party - that is precisely Merkel's problem. They accuse her of not wanting to come down definitively on any one side of an issue. There is also internal squabbling over the topic of tax reductions. Calls are growing louder within the CDU to not just give banks and industry a helping hand - but German consumers as well.
