(9 Oct 2018) LEADIN: Google's new Pixel 3 smartphone boasts an AI-powered camera that automatically picks the best snap for its users. The U.S. tech giant debuted two new versions of its smartphone at an event in New York, along with a new high-definition screened tablet and a home smart display. STORYLINE: Google debuted its new smartphone at an event in New York Tuesday (9 October). The new Pixel 3 comes in two sizes - the standard 5.5-inch device and a larger-screened 6.3-inch device, called "XL." The smartphone boasts a number of new camera features, including "Top Shot," which uses AI to automatically pick the best photo, and "Group Selfie Cam," which lets users take wide angle selfies. The Pixel branded devices are part of the company's continuing push to embed its digital services and Android software more deeply into peoples' lives. Google said its new Pixel 3 smartphone was available to pre-order straight away for $799 USD. It's set to launch in the U.S. on 18 October. The first two generations of the phone have barely made a dent in the market. Google has sold an estimated 7 million Pixels over the past two years, almost imperceptible next to the 3.6 billion phones shipped during that time, according to the research firm International Data Corp. Google launched its line of high-end phones two years ago to better compete against Apple, Samsung and other device makers. That includes many that rely on free software and apps such as the free Android operating system, which powers most of the world's mobile devices, as well as Google's search engine, Google Maps and YouTube. Google also debuted a new tablet, called Pixel Slate. The high-definition screened device will start at $599 USD. The tech giant also unveiled a new Home Hub smart display that works with voice commands. It will start at $149 USD.
