Some kind of ornamental plant I found along the coast that was kind of yucca like... sort of.. with large stalks about 8-10 feet tall. It worked wonderfully for a spindle. I used western red cedar for a hearth board because it is also fairly soft. It did not take hardly any pressure and produced an ember very quickly... and burned out very quickly!
