Japanese FM on strained relations with SKorea

(19 Dec 2018) Japan's Foreign Minister said Japan is waiting for a response from South Korea regarding a Supreme Court of Korea ruling about wartime forced laborers. South Korea's top court in October ordered Nippon Steel to pay 100 million won (87,680 US dollars) each to four plaintiffs forced to work at the company during Japan's colonial rule of the Korean Peninsula. The court made similar rulings on another Japanese company, triggering disputes between the two countries. On Wednesday, Foreign Minister Taro Kono said he believes that Korea does not want to damage both countries' "legal foundation," but he remains "concerned" about the ruling. Japan maintains all wartime compensation issues were settled by a 1965 treaty between the governments. Regarding relations with Saudi Arabia, Kono said he believed reform was very important and Japan would like to watch over the country "to make sure they don't face any setbacks."
