BUNCOMBE COUNTY, N.C. -- If you've ever been to a big sports event in the Asheville area, there's a good chance that Ben VanCamp had a part in organizing it. He is the Executive Director of the Asheville-Buncombe Regional Sports Commission. Its a mouthful but this week's Game Changer deserves a lot of credit for his accomplishments. Even though he'd rather the credit go to his colleagues. Basketball has been a part of Ben VanCamp's life for as long as he can remember. Ben VanCamp, Game Changer, "I went to springfield college where actually basektball was invented, so it was a big part of my college experience. And now it's a big part of my work and life experience." That's why Wednesday's announcement about the So-Con Tournament staying in Asheville through 2021 means so much to Ben. John Iamarino, "the conference will have its basketball and wrestling championships here in Asheville through 2021." 2021 happens to be the 100 year anniversary of the Southern Conference. The idea to keep the tournament in Asheville for that celebration was Ben's idea. John Iamarino, Southern Conference Commissioner, "I really feel like Ben is part of our staff. We see him so much. He knows our people. He is tireless during, before and after the tournament." As the executive director of the Asheville Buncombe Regional Sports Commission, Ben is instrumental in the planning and execution of just about every big sports event that happens in the area. That includes Symetra Tour golf, lacrosse tournaments and the Asheville marathon. Ben, "I don't sleep much. It has been a busy spring. A lot of great sporting events. We have a great team of volunteers behind each event. There's no way I could do it on my own."
