As a working theory, viewing Star Wars as a tribute or being inspired by Issac Asimov's Foundation series has yielded some good insight into uncovering the past whys and hows. Also knowing that George Lucas is a big fan the Monomyth as described in the Joseph Campbell work The Hero with a Thousand Faces tends to show reason to his actions that fans have found critical over the years.

HOBER MALLOW (Foundation series) as the inspiration to Han Solo

His antagonist is JORANE SUTT. The comparison to Jabba the Hutt makes a lot more sense when you remember that in Episode 4 the inserted deleted scene featured Jabba as a human (remastered as what we know as a Hutt now) with introduced conflict (the proposed bounty) that carries similar weight to the framing of Hober Mallow.

Harrison Ford and the on set directing at the time was likely inspired in his performance by Clint Eastwood who had recently released The Outlaw Josey Wales and a Dirty Harry film called the Enforcer in 1976.

Later George Lucas had a change of heart about how he felt Han Solo should have acted in that scene. Why? Because Hober Mallow would have done it differently and it did not fit into the monomyth.

A word of caution to fans that express heavy negativity to George Lucas. Keep in mind that its rare that we have an artist alive in our same age that has had even a fraction of impact as the works of George Lucas. Picaso is hailed as a master today, but in his life time, he was poor and unknown. If you were an artist in the days of Picaso how would you regard him? George and the rest of us won't be around forever and the next generations will have their own thoughts on how they view his work. I personally believe that there is a lot of undue criticism that is being passed on to younger reviewers that have likely not seen the original movies, yet parrot the words they read or hear from others, because its the popular opinion.

Whether I am right or wrong is beside the point. The point is to think critically for oneself in order to progress thought process as you enjoy the work of another.
