What if museums were not just places that simply collected things. What if they were also places that made things? The Essential Design Series was a series of workshops exploring the concept of 'Essential Design' (A Design style influenced by sustainability and responsible innovation that focuses on reducing inputs, reusing materials and recycling to produce 'essential' products). The series was hosted by the Queensland Museum & Sciencentre in collaboration with the Holloway design studio in 2014. The Workshops took place over 4 weeks both on site at the Queensland Museum and on location at the Holloway Studio in West End. Participants engaged in a month of learning how to design a pair of sunglasses from scratch under the artisan supervision of the Holloway design studio leads. As the workshops progressed, the participants worked together to collectively refine a unique design that was ultimately accessioned into the Queensland Museum collection. Participants also received a pair of the final glasses to take home for themselves. This project marks one of the first ever examples of a museum participating in the creation of its own collection, simultaneously engaging a passionate group of advocates.
