(16 Oct 2018) Vice President Pence and his wife Karen toured farms affected by Hurricane Michael. Pence spoke with farmers about the impact of the devastation with visits to animal feed company Flint River Mills and Pecan Ridge Plantation. "Seeing is believing and when you hear about a category nearly Category 5 storm coming ashore, when you hear the assessments that we've been hearing and it's a whole different thing to literally see it," said Pence. "Hurricane Michael was a generational storm, we're going to address it that way. We're working with the leaders in Congress and in the city and on the farm, we're going to bring this region all the way back." Some of the crops that were damaged ranged from cotton to peanuts to pecans. Farmers say the damage to pecan groves for example in southwest Georgia will be felt for generations. Pecan trees typically bear nuts about seven years after planting but don't become profitable for about a decade.
