MORAINE -- It's only expected to get colder overnight and into Tuesday, so instead of telling you once again to bundle up, we wanted to show you why it's important and just how dangerous it can be.I just deal with the cold as it comes, said Bernie Hoskins.Hoskins and the rest of the Miami Valley has been dealing with this type of cold for weeks, and the temperatures can be dangerous.Frostbite can occur if you're out in temperatures like this as soon as half an hour, Moraine Fire Lt. Doug Baumergartner said.So we wanted to see what happens to your body heat when exposed to sub-zero temperatures.Lt. Baumgartner shows us his thermal imaging camera used to detect heat. You can see the part of his body that is not clothed is a little lighter than the part that is, said Lt. Baumgartner.Inside, firefighter Jacob Irving looks warm, so we tested his body heat using a laser gun.The laser light is where the temperature is being taken and his chin is 93 degrees, said Lt. Baumgartner. His shirt 80 degrees. All normal. We followed Irving outside, where he stood with no coat on for three minutes. It was pretty cold, it was very frigid, the wind just bites you and nips at you, it's piercing, Irving said. Then it's back inside to see where his body heat is now.Now Jacob's chin is 82 degrees, said Lt. Baumgartner. An 11-degree difference. And his shirt is now 61 degrees, said Lt. Baumgartner. But you can see the biggest difference on the thermal imaging camera. His nose black, and you can't even see his hand or fingers. His fingers are 62, said Lt. Baumgartner. Is that bad? asked the reporter, That could lead to a bad situation if he didn't get back inside quickly.A lesson Irving already knows. It doesn't take long, he said. Especially in conditions like this, it definitely is not a good situation to be in. The best thing you can do to protect yourself is wear layers. You should always wear a winter coat, but layering up is the best way to keep in your body heat.
