Grayson Wheatley presenting at the 2nd annual Ancestral Health Symposium 2012 (AHS12). Lessons from the Frontlines: A Cardiovascular Surgeon's Dilemma with Professional Guidelines in the Era of the Paleo Diet and Ancestral Health Abstract: Rising rates of obesity, hypertension and type-2 diabetes increasingly predispose western populations to cardiovascular disease (CVD). A minority of individuals ultimately develop ischemic heart disease requiring interventional or surgical treatment and represent a unique subset of patients with an exceptional CVD burden. Although numerous risk factors are involved, the impact of dietary and lifestyle choices may be particularly significant in these patients. A discrepancy exists, however, between established professional guidelines and emerging scientific data documenting the numerous health benefits of a paleo diet and ancestral lifestyle. Significant barriers exist within the delivery of cardiovascular care, as with other areas of medicine, which prevent patients, physicians and other health care providers from integrating nutritional recommendations which are perceived as disruptive by existing professional guidelines. It is important that new avenues become established within medicine and cardiovascular care to allow alternative nutritional principles to be offered to patients. Barriers to implementing the paleo diet into medical practice will be discussed along with recommendations for constructively creating new professional opportunities to allow cardiovascular patients to gain access to relevant and timely dietary information which could significantly impact their health and recovery. Bio: Grayson Wheatley, M.D., is a Cardiovascular Surgeon at the Arizona Heart Institute and an internationally renowned expert in minimally invasive and endovascular therapies for cardiovascular diseases. He is the author of over 50 peer-reviewed publications and a frequent presenter at medical conferences.
