This NASA fact explains that astronauts study sand in space to understand liquefaction. On Earth, gravity causes sand particles to pack together tightly, creating friction that strengthens the soil. However, when water infiltrates, it reduces friction, causing the soil to behave like a liquid, a phenomenon known as liquefaction. By observing sand particles slowly separating in the microgravity of space, scientists can better understand how soil behaves during earthquakes, leading to improved safety measures on Earth.
