Fire is a natural process that prevents forests from becoming overgrown or cluttered with dead wood. By choosing to allow natural wildfires to burn for the past 40+ years, Yosemite has reduced its risk of mega-fires. Case in point: the Ferguson Fire roared through treetops as a crown fire, then dropped to the forest floor in this part of the park, where an old fire had burned years before.
