A Community Relaxes After Jail Opens Up Again

FAIRBORN -- For the past two years, Fairborn Police had to take prisoners to Xenia, making it hard for them to patrol the streets. Now, the jail is back open. Sergeant Paul Hicks said it was a whirlwind without his city's jail.     "We would have to pick the prisoner up, take them to our agency to process them, then drive them all the way back to Green County," said Sgt. Hicks. With all the extra work it took for each arrest, he said it was like they were one officer short every shift. Also, officers didn't have the time to arrest for minor misdemeanors, so warnings were given out instead. Now, Fairborn police officers will be out on the streets faster and that is good news for the community."I think its a good thing for the community because it saves on transport time, keeps more officers on the road," said Mike Howard who works in Fairborn. "It's definitely a safer feeling knowing there right here and not going to Greene County and taking time putting prisoners there because we don't have a jail," said Vicky Fox, a Fairborn resident. Some people knew they weren't going to be arrested and now we can follow up with those," said Sgt. Hicks. The police department did not have to cut any personnel to re-open the jail. It was able to allocate money through cost saving measures like decreasing the overtime budget.
