After taking a look at endgame Mile I was curious about Zema. I had to start a game from the beginning so that Zema would still be in its stoned state. I did not check the southwestern house for obvious reasons. It's open anyway and you can clearly see that the parents have been turned to stone. I just used the doorway as a convenient warp point.

As you can see, unlike Mile, the NPCs in the locked houses are not turned to stone. When you talk to the NPCs behind the locked doors they have the same dialog you'd get after using the alshline. All shops function normally. Although in the video I only purchased an item from the tool shop as an example of this. If you go behind the counter you get the generic "They've been turned into stone!" dialog. But this isn't strange considering the behavior of other unreachable behind-the-counter NPCs.  They tend to either have blank text boxes or text from another NPC in town, save for a few cases of unique text that you would not normally see.

I'm wondering what the difference is between stoned Zema and endgame Mile. It makes me wonder if there was ever any intention to let you enter the houses in Mile after The Edge opens up. Why change the sprites in the locked houses if you can't get in? Maybe there's some technical reason involving event flags that works differently there than it does in Zema.
