Reflection on ancient and modern thinking about extraterrestrials has led the way to rover explorations of Mars. As a planetary scientist and member of the science team for the Mars Curiosity rover, Dr. Dyar reviews the goals of the Curiosity mission, present recent results, and talks about the future of human exploration on the Red Planet.

Darby is a professor of astronomy at Mount Holyoke College in South Hadley, Massachusetts, USA. The primary goal of her research is to understand how hydrogen and oxygen are distributed throughout our solar system, particularly in terrestrial bodies such as the Earth, the Moon, Mars, and the parent bodies of meteorites. She is a frequent contributor to scientific journals, and has been awarded numerous grants from the American Chemical Society, the National Science Foundation, and NASA, among other institutions. She has ongoing funding from NASA's Mars Fundamental Research program to conduct research for the space agency's rovers, including Curiosity, which touched down on the Red Planet August 6, 2012.
