This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. Think history is all about dates and names?  Think again.  History teacher, Tom Niermann, encourages his students and all of us to "think big" when it comes to history to help see another side of the events we thought we knew so well.

Tom has been a history teacher for 25 years and holds a doctorate in history from the University of Kansas.  He has taught in a wide range of schools from a small rural school, to an urban school with its stereotypical problems of violence and poverty, to wealthy suburban schools.  He currently teaches at the Pembroke Hill School, which is private college preparatory school in Kansas City.   One thing that has remained remarkably consistent among his students, despite time, various backgrounds and life stories, is their firm desire to change the world.  And it is their inspiring ambition that drives his goals as a teacher. When Tom is not busy with school, he enjoy reading, playing baseball, and spending time with his wife, two kids, and their dog.
