(20 Nov 2018) Britain's Prince of Wales on Tuesday celebrated the 80th anniversary of the Kindertransports by hosting a reception for some of the people who were brought to Britain as part of the famous rescue operation.
Some 10-thousand mostly Jewish children were sent to Britain from Nazi Germany and elsewhere in Europe just before and during the first years of the Second World War.
Now in their 80s and 90s, the survivors told Prince Charles their stories at the reception at Clarence House in London.
One guest recalled how she remembered the day Prince Charles was born, while she was teaching at a primary school in Lille.
The first Kindertransport was organised from an orphanage in Berlin and arrived in London in 1938 on 2nd December.
They continued to come until the outbreak of war in September 1939, when the borders were closed.
The operation was known as the Kindertransport - "Kinder" is German for children.
