I must add that I do appreciate China's undying respect for America's national pastime. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x_m___lk44E I am not questioning the people's love for sports. I am questioning the people's government, something the people of China are not allowed to do for themselves without great repercussions. I was reading from this article: http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2008/jun/18/china.olympicgames2008 I am more than willing to admit I don't know all the details about all this. I don't want to know the details. I know enough to know the Olympics and China's current government do not go well together, and this travesty should be ended now, but it won't, and we will all watch the spectacle. You can read more people's opinions and learn more about China's oppressive approach to the Olympics starting at this link. http://www.metafilter.com/72451/Chinas-Olympian-Human-Rights-Challenges Back in May, this was happening: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CoAb74viSjA Where violent protesters met violent supporters in China and Korea, as the torch was being ceremoniously carried into communist territory under armed escort. The protesters insist so long as there are no human rights in this region, there should be no Olympics. This turned to violence, and both protesters and supporters accuse the other side of starting it. So now the communist government is just telling people to stay home, because they can't control the crowds. This way anyone who doesn't stay home they can immediately label as lawbreakers, and condone their own violence regardless of who started it. You cannot allow the Olympic spirit to fluorish by restricting the people who might witness (audience) or participate (competitors). The communist government thought that by participating in the Olympics they could prove to the world that they can participate in world events while still behaving as they do toward their own people, but they are proving themselves to be the anti-thesis of everything the Olympic spirit represents. You can't help something by crushing it.
