Science and morality are usually thought of
as separate domains. But hope for the progress of the human race rests on both of them. With science-based technology we can make our lives more comfortable, stave off diseases, and perhaps even escape from the Earth before the Sun becomes a red giant! But we also need to be more compassionate to one another otherwise
the gains of science will not necessarily reduce suffering.
This is because the technological improvements may not be available to everyone and, furthermore, much suffering
is simply because we treat each other badly. But despite the received wisdom about the disconnection between science and morality, is there a single human attitude that might connect progress in both of these areas?
Surprisingly the answer is yes!

Dr John Lambie is Reader in Psychology at Anglia Ruskin University, and has been a lecturer and a researcher for more than 20 years. His research focuses on emotions
and mental health, but also with an interest in rationality and the philosophy of science.
