This Core Concept video focuses on Marcus Tullius Cicero's work On The Ends, specifically on his discussion in book 3 focused on the Stoic conception of "indifferents" (adiaphora), which are neither good nor bad. These encompass matters such as life and death, health and disease, wealth and poverty, and pain and pleasure. None of these make a significant contribution to happiness or to virtue as Stoics understand them. Stoics do, however, distinguish between "preferred" and "rejected" indifferents, which do have some value, though not the same sort of value that would make them actually good or bad. Cicero sets out how these function and why they still matter in Stoic Ethics. If you'd like to support my work producing videos like this, become a Patreon supporter!
