Nextcloud GmbH is a German company that offers a fully Open Source enterprise file sync and storage suite. Initially it started as a competitor of Dropbox, but in a very short time it has evolved into a competitor of Microsoft Office 365 and Google Suite. Today, the company added a new feature to the product called Nextcloud Talk. It adds chatting (text, audio and video) capabilities to product. “Users can use it as a standalone feature or integrate with the rest of these stack,” Frank Karlitschek, Founder and Managing Director of Nextcloud, said in an interview. “So you can work together with your colleagues or team members, while collaborating on documents.” The company has been working on this feature for more than one and a half year. Citing the reason behind adding this feature, Karlitschek said, “There are some customers who are very conservatives. All want is the basic file sync and share services. But there are other customers who want more features in the collaboration space. Sime file sync and share is not enough for them, they want something like Office 365 and Google Suite” One of the reasons organizations choose Nextcloud is that “we are building something like Office 365 and Google Suite but its 100 present self host and 100 percent open source. That’s unique, I don’t think you will find something like that anywhere else,” said Karchslikck . Nextcloud’s main strength is privacy and security. The company boasts of its end-to-end encryption. It’s a mandatory requirement in industries like financial and healthcare. Many companies use it to protect themselves from corporate or state sponsored espionage. While Office 365 and other commercial players also offer some level of encryption, what sets Nextcloud apart from them is that they even encrypt metadata. In case of other solutions bad actors or government agencies may not be able to see the actual chat steam, but they can still see who was contacted at what time and the duration of the calls, but with Nextcloud Talk, even meta data is encrypted.
