PRIME MINISTER CALLS ON CYPRUS

(14 Aug 1958) The Greek Premier Mr Karamanlis, greeted Mr Macmillan in Athens. From there, the Premier went to Ankara, and then he paid a call at Cyprus on his way back. Here, with Sir Hugh Foot, the Governor, Mr Macmillan discussed the island's situation on the spot. A ten day operation against EOKA was in progress, and as well as receiving the latest information, the Premier went off with Sir Hugh Foot to visit units of the security forces. Since his return, Mr Macmillan has said that he has come home, "encouraged by his talks in Athens and Ankara".
