Myanmar: "Considerable support" for the principle of a Security Council statement

United Nations, New York, 11 August 2009 - The Security Council met this afternoon at the request of number of delegations to consider the situation in Myanmar after the verdict of sentence of Aung San Suu Kyi. The Council had a discussion around the table and a draft statement by the Council was circulated. There was "considerable support" said the President of the Security Council and Permanent Representative of United Kingdom, H.E. Sir John Sawers, for the principle of the statement but a number of delegations wanted to refer back to their capital overnight for advices and instructions. Therefore  consultations were adjourned. The Security Council will resume discussion of this matter tomorrow.
