(Invited Speaker) Hurricane modification by cold-pool manipulation

605/610 (Washington State Convention Center)
William R. Cotton, Colorado State University, Fort Collins, CO

Recent simulations of hurricane mitigation by hygroscopic aerosol seeding by our group and Danny Rosenfeld's group indicate that the primary response to seeding that reduces hurricane intensity is via strengthening cold-pools in the outer rainbands. The focus in this paper is on how cold-pools can be manipulated by hygroscopic seeding and how cold-pools in the outer rainbands impact the strength of the hurricane. Moreover, we discuss environmental conditions which may be the most favorable for hurricane mitigation and conditions in which storms are essentially insulated from cold-pool manipulation.
