French protesters express anger at high taxes

(1 Dec 2018) Protestors in Paris expressed their anger towards rising tax and the country's high cost of living. Hedwige Lebrun, a resident in Paris, told the Associated Press on Saturday that "purchasing power is enormously diminishing every day. And then: taxes, taxes and taxes." Several hundreds peaceful protesters, called "yellow jackets" for the fluorescent vests they wear, passed through police checkpoints to reached the Champs-Elysees behind a big banner writing "Macron, stop taking us for idiots." Other demonstrators clashed with French police earlier. They built barricades in the middle of streets in central Paris, lit fires and threw rocks at officers on Saturday while police fired tear gas and water cannons to try to push back the protesters who gathered around the Arc de Triomphe. Shopkeepers on the Champs-Elysees prepared for possible new violence, bringing in workers to barricade boutique windows with board. Since the protests kicked off on Nov. 17, two people were killed and hundreds injured in accidents stemming from the protests since they kicked off Nov. 17, and hundreds of protesters and police have been injured.
