http://www.pamsdogacademy.com Train your dog to take it and drop it. If your puppy is not dropping the toy, you can't get mad at him. The puppy does not know that he is supposed to drop the toy. He needs to be taught this. If you just yank it out of the puppy's mouth, then he will not learn what he is supposed to do. He will only learn that the human will sometimes exert force and just take his prized toy away. It is important for the puppy to learn that just because he does let it go that the play session is not over. You want him to learn that by playing by your rules that the game will most likely continue. :) Step 1. Play Step 2. Make the toy boring and WAIT for the puppy to drop it on his own. Once he does finally drop it, click and reward. In the video I did use a positive interrupter to speed up the process a little. My positive interrupter means stop what you are doing and look at me. However, after I did it one time, Twix caught on and when the toy went limp, he dropped it faster and faster. Step 3. Play with the puppy again. Step 4. Make the toy boring and limp and wait for the drop. When he does drop it, click and reward with more playing. Step 5. Put it on cue. Do not say drop, drop, drop to your puppy if he is not dropping it. Wait to say "drop" when your puppy is dropping it reliably without you asking. Then and only then can you say drop right before you think he will drop it. If he does drop it, click and reward! If he does not drop it, WAIT! Do not repeat the cue "drop", wait until he does drop it, make sure the toy is boring and limp, and when he drops click and reward. Step 6. Repeat over and over! Oh and my last rule of tug is that if my dog accidentally bites me, the game is over for a few seconds. I am not mean to them and I do not yell at them, I just simply stop playing with them. Then in a few seconds we continue our play session. :) Have fun with your puppy!
