The Minecraft 1.8 jar has been "leaked" (with Notch's approval). It's got some bugs that will have to be fixed before the "official" release of 1.8 but here's a sort of sneak peak at *some* of what 1.8 has to offer.

******IMPORTANT!!******
This pre-release IS LOADED WITH BUGS! BECAUSE OF THIS YOU SHOULD BACKUP YOUR ENTIRE MINECRAFT DIRECTORY AND YOUR WORLDS *****BEFORE***** USING THIS VERSION!!!

Then restore that backup *****BEFORE***** you upgrade to the "official" release of 1.8!

If you want to check out the pre-release you can get it here:

and the Server version is here:

Note: So far I've found that furnaces in 1.8 are bugged and will cause a "saving chunks" crash. On restarting the stuff you had in it is done but putting fuel or stuff to cook into it will cause the crash.

Also, jumping and throwing a block down below you requires a click for each block. No idea yet if that is intentional or if it's another bug.

***THIS JUST IN!!!***

YOU DO ****NOT**** HAVE TO LOSE YOUR EXISTING MAPS!!!!

As I was starting this upload I *just* saw this reddit post

HOWTO: Get villages and strongholds in new chunks on pre-1.8 maps

There is a new setting when creating a map in 1.8 for generating structures. Without this setting on you will not get villages or strongholds, even in new chunks.

When opening an old world with 1.8 this setting will be off, and there is no way to turn it on for an old map in-game. You can however turn them on by editing the save file.

If you do this you'll get villages and strongholds in new chunks on old maps! So no need to throw away your old worlds when 1.8 comes out!

This is what you do:

   1. Open your old world in 1.8
   2. Save and close the world
   3. Download NBTedit (http://www.minecraftforum.net/viewtopic.php?t=7868)
   4. Open the level.dat file of the save in NBTedit
   5. Change the setting "MapFeatures" from 0 to 1
   6. Save the level.dat file and close NBTedit
   7. Open your world in minecraft, go explore new chunks, enjoy the new features!

(This has been tested with the "leaked" 1.8 client)

Edit: I think this also affects abandoned mines and ruins the same way.
