How I make a fire in my woodburning stove. Just paper and wood, no firelighters needed.
I build up the sides using the main fuel, in this case Alder. In the center scrunch up some paper and then overlay the drier kindling in a crisscross fashion.  Laying the sticks like this allows plenty of oxygen to get around the timber for a good burn. The heat from the softwood burn will be enough that the hardwood starts burning away.  If you lay a few pieces of hardwood over the top they will automatically fall into the center and burn away.

Reclaimed timber from pallets is good as long as its fairly clean and has no paint on it.  Be aware that pallet timber is made sometimes from hardwood such as beech or oak, save these for furniture projects.
