Former Petrotrin workers protested outside the gas bond on Monday morning to highlight that severance payments have not been made to temporary workers. President of the OWTU Petrotrin branch, Christopher Jackman, said maligning the workers is not helpful, and cognizance must be taken of the fact that the small payment of $20,000, which temporary workers would get, is being withheld. Mr. Jackman said all employees were taxed a quarter of their severance and this was not supposed to happen. He said, according to the law, only sums of over $500,000 was supposed to be taxed. In a previous Memo to employees, Petrotrin said it was withholding taxes on termination benefits while employees confirmed their tax status. Mr. Jackman said, though, Petrotrin has now told employees that it has submitted all taxes to the Board of Inland Revenue and workers will be forced to wait on Government to have the excess refunded.
