Helix MIDI Confusion

I'm using the MIDI of the Helix to loop to itself so I can run the looper without having to open the looper page. I also want to use Instants to sometimes start the looper when I do a snapshot change and sometimes stop the looper when I do a snapshot change. This works fine but when I assign MIDI commands to change snapshots (So i can have the looper controls always available as well), the CC change is not transmitted until I release the footswitch, not when I press it.)
