Family members gather, one year after disappearance of Argentine submarine

(16 Nov 2018) One year after the disappearance of an Argentine submarine, family members of the 44 crew gathered at the Argentine naval vessels' home base in Mar del Plata. Many held up images of their missing loved-ones, while others gripped Argentine flags adorned in slogans such as "never forget our 44 heroes". Argentine President Mauricio Macri accompanied by members of his government spoke at an official ceremony at the base. Despite no sign of ARA San Juan vessel following a multinational hunt that lasted for months and is ongoing, the Argentine leader said that the search would continue. The TR-1700 class electric diesel submarine, manufactured in Germany and in operation since the 1980s, disappeared on November 15 as it sailed from Ushuaia, in the far south of Argentina. It was returning to its base in Mar del Plata, 230 miles (400 kilometers) south of Buenos Aires, after participating in a training exercise. Gathering at the gates of the naval base the relatives of the crew used the anniversary to express their frustration with the way the investigation is being handled by authorities. No clear hypothesis about what caused its disappearance has yet been determined.
