Animal experts suggest the turtles might have been killed after being hit fishing trawlers in the sea. The Olive Ridley turtles - a species deemed vulnerable - that were found dead measured up to a length of 60cm. The gruesome discovery was found on a beach in Puri in Odisha, eastern India. They come in large numbers to the Odisha coast for their annual nesting. The bodies of the turtles have been sent for post-mortem examination to try and uncover the cause of death. Shocked Sarat Chandra Behera, an official at the local forest department, said: "We have never seen bodies of turtles in such high number. "We suspect that the turtles were killed after being hit by the fishing trawlers in the sea.
