Chronicling an encounter with her family in Kenya, Amaal reconciles the identity she has created with how she is perceived by the western communities she was raised in, and her East African family as well. Amaal Said is a Danish-born Somali photographer and poet. She is a former Barbican Young Poet and won the Wasafari New Writing Prize for Poetry in 2015. She uses photography, especially of women of colour, to widen representation. She uses her poetry and photography to document stories. She was recently featured at the London Africa Writes Festival 2017. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community.
